Why It Matters

Back and Neck Pain Can Be Hard to Ignore

Back and neck pain can build gradually or appear after an injury, long hours at a desk or a change in activity. While symptoms can sometimes settle with rest, recurring or persistent pain often benefits from a more active approach.

Physical therapy looks at how you move, where strength or mobility may be limited, and what could be contributing to your symptoms. Treatment can then focus on restoring movement, building strength and helping you return to everyday activity with greater confidence.

Starting treatment early can also help prevent pain and movement limitations from becoming more disruptive to your routine.

What Treatment Looks Like

Treatment Built Around How You Move

Your treatment plan is shaped around your symptoms, movement and goals. Depending on what you need, your physical therapy may combine hands-on treatment, targeted exercise and practical guidance for everyday movement.

Hands-on therapy

Hands-on techniques can be used to improve mobility, reduce muscle tension and help you move more comfortably as part of your rehabilitation.

Targeted strengthening

Targeted exercises help build strength and support around the areas involved in your back or neck pain, with progressions adapted to your ability.

Habits that protect you

Practical changes to how you sit, lift, sleep, and work so the improvement you make in the clinic holds up in real life.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an MRI or X-ray before starting physical therapy?

Usually not. Most back and neck pain can be evaluated and treated without imaging, and clinical guidelines recommend starting with active care. If your therapist finds signs that imaging or a physician visit is needed, they will tell you directly and help coordinate it.

Is physical therapy safe if I have a herniated disc?

In most cases, yes. A large share of disc-related pain improves with conservative care. Your therapist adapts treatment to your symptoms, monitors how your body responds, and coordinates with a physician if your case needs more than therapy.

Do I need a doctor's referral to start?

In most cases, no. New York's Direct Access law lets you begin physical therapy without a physician referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days. We confirm the details for your specific insurance plan when you book.

Do you accept my insurance?

We are in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, workers' compensation, and no-fault. Share your details and we verify your coverage before your first visit.

How much does physical therapy cost?

For most patients, care is covered by insurance and you pay only your plan's copay, if any. We verify your benefits before your first visit and tell you exactly what to expect, with no surprise bills.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your therapist performs a full hands-on evaluation of your movement, strength, and history, explains what is going on, and walks you through a personalized treatment plan. Bring your insurance card and comfortable clothing.

How long is each visit, and how many will I need?

Most visits run 40 to 60 minutes. The number of visits depends on your condition and goals; your therapist gives you a clear plan and timeline at your evaluation and updates it as you progress.
